Auckland, August 24, 2017

Auckland Council has awarded $453,000 in grants to 32 events across Auckland thanks to its Regional Event Fund.

The event grants, awarded by Auckland Council’s Community Development and Safety Committee, were assessed on several factors, including the level of positive community benefits generated, how effectively run previous events had been and the level of support the event has from its community.

Diverse range

Committee Chair, Councillor Cathy Casey, said that she is delighted with the variety of successful applicants.

From the Pride Festival and Elvis in the Gardens to Korean Day, Toddler Day Out, ASB Polyfest and the New Zealand Communities Football Cup, it is fantastic that Auckland Council is supporting events that cater to such a diverse range of Aucklanders. The grant has a budget of $600,000 for the 2017/2018 year, allocated over two grant rounds.

Key drivers

Auckland Council has three key drivers to determine its involvement in regional events: Building regional identity, delivering on Auckland-wide strategies such as recreation arts and culture, and showcasing Auckland’s assets and what is special about the region.

These regional events bring a wide range of benefits to Auckland, such as building a sense of connection within Auckland’s diverse communities, making life in Auckland more vibrant, and developing pride in and enjoyment of Auckland as a region.

Online applications for the second grant round opens on October 1, with the Community Development and Safety Committee to announce the successful applicants and their level of funding in February.
