Labour believes in public ownership and control of assets (including water); delegating power and resources to Local Boards to provide for safe and liveable communities; making excellent public transport a priority; fairer rates, prudent financial management and economic development for our area.

The new Auckland City ward of Maungakiekie-Tamaki extends from Onehunga to Glen Innes and includes Royal Oak, Oranga, Te Papapa, Mt Wellington, Panmure and Pt England.

Labour has candidates for the Council, Tamaki subdivision of the Local Board and the Mt Wellington Licensing Trust.

Richard Northey, now an Auckland City Councillor, has an impressive record of serving the Maungakiekie and Tamaki communities. He has been a Councillor for 12 years and a Member of Parliament for nine years.

A tireless worker who delivers on his commitments, Richard has played a key role in securing new Community Centres in Oranga, Onehunga and Riverside, the Community Recreation Centre at Tamaki College, the Onehunga Library, the Panmure Town Centre upgrade and a contract for quality restoration of the Onehunga Foreshore. His strong local knowledge is vital for the new Auckland Council.

Richard lives in Onehunga with his wife Robyn. As a family man with three children and seven grandchildren, he wants the ward and the city to be a great place for the growth and education of children.

He currently chairs the Auckland District Council of Social Services, the Auckland Community Housing Trust and the Problem Gambling Foundation.

Richard is committed to making the Auckland Council work. He will ensure that the voice of the people of Maungakiekie and Tamaki is heard loud, clear at the top table, and stop the Downtown takeover of Auckland.

He will fight to keep rates fair for ordinary Aucklanders, invest in transport solutions, and build new facilities. He celebrates our cultural diversity.

Apart from Richard, the Labour team includes Josephine Bartley, Councillor Leila Boyle, Chris Makoare and Alan Verrall (Tamaki Local Board); Ms Boyle, Mary Ann de Kort, Jessica Gosche, Mike Murray, Alan Verrall and Jan Welch (Mt Wellington Licensing Trust).

Labour is supporting Mayoral candidate Len Brown and the City Vision Health Team, comprising Jo Agnew, Jeanette Elley, Robyn Northey and Bob Tizard for the Auckland District Health Board.
