Messages of condemnation and condolences continue to pour through emails, text messages and through our websites from people in New Zealand and abroad on the Christchurch atrocity which has thus far killed 50 people men, women and children, who were praying inside two Mosques in the Garden City on Friday, March 15, 2019.

Ahemad Bhamji
Chairman, Masjid-E-Umar Mt Roskill, Auckland

As Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said, Friday, March 14, 2019 was one of the darkest days in the history of New Zealand. So many innocent people have lost their lives and many injured people are still in Hospital. The Christchurch massacre has left us in the Muslim community and indeed throughout New Zealand in a state of shock.

I wish to acknowledge the stupendous work being done by the New Zealand Police. Apart from increasing the safety measures at all Mosques throughout the country, they have been in constant contact with us to find out what more can be done. They have also extended their further support and cooperation. This is very assuring.

Harish Lodhia
Hon Consul for Fiji in Auckland

It is unimaginable that such atrocity can be committed in New Zealand. It is also unimaginable that innocent people including children have been made victims of extreme views. Clearly, there is no place for such terrorists in our civilised country.

My wife Jyoti joins me in offering our condolences to the people of Christchurch. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of people who have lost their lives.

We grieve with you and the Muslim Community.

Dr Pushpa Wood Wellington Interfaith Council

We resolve that we will not allow this act to define us as a nation and we will collectively work towards an inclusive, peaceful and accepting nation.

The stronger we stand as a nation, the weaker the terrorists will feel. Let us make sure that we stay strong to ensure that the hatred, fear, and terrorism stays out of our country.

We should call it for what it is – an act of terrorism by some senseless people and such people do not have a place among us.
