One of New Zealand’s largest purpose-built Mosque, Masjid Baitul Muqeet, will be the venue for this year’s Iftar (breaking of the fast) experience on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the event will allow guests to experience a glimpse into Ramadan, the Islamic Holy Month of fasting.

The evening is a regular occurrence in the Ahmadiyya Muslim community’s annual calendar, and gives non-Muslim guests a chance to gain familiarity with the ritual of fasting, one of the cardinal pillars of the Islamic faith.

Bringing together Kiwis

With the tragedy in Christchurch still fresh in the minds of all New Zealanders, by hosting events like this the Ahmadiyya Muslim community hopes to build an understanding between followers of all faiths by breaking down barriers and bringing Kiwis together.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community President Bashir Khan said that Muslims observe the Holy Month of Ramadan all over the world by fasting and spending time in prayers.

“However, the practices and details of this Islamic ritual can still be something of a mystery for others. With this event, we want to reach out to people and give them the opportunity to share a unique experience with Muslims in New Zealand,” he said.

Mr Khan said that Ramadan is more than merely abstaining from food and drink.

Prophet’s Teaching

“Throughout this month, Prophet Mohammed was constantly involved in acts of charity, whether by giving alms or by simply serving his fellow human beings. This is the spirit that we as Muslims must try and emulate throughout this month and beyond.”

The Programme will begin at 415 pm with a short presentation by Imam Mustenser Qamar, followed by the breaking of the fast at sunset.

The guests will then have an opportunity to see the evening prayer service, as well as undertaking a guided tour of the mosque, followed by dinner.
