Auckland International Airport taxi drivers, who were on a hunger strike demanding better fare system and working conditions, called of their strike on December 12.
They were members of the Airport Taxi Association (ATA) and had resorted to a relay hunger strike seeking to end to what they had described as ‘discrimination.’
The Airport’s Retail and Commercial General Manager Richard Barker said that he and his officials had with the ATA and had agreed to improve conditions, including upgrading sun shelter, drinking water and toilets for taxi drivers.
Short Fares
The Airport will also try a new short fare system, allowing taxi drivers, who have completed a short-fare trip to get straight back on their taxi rank rather than waiting, reducing time between fares.
As reported earlier, the Association was upset that a taxi stand for big brand companies, which had been built near its stand, was threatening business.
But the airport has promised to improve signage and trial a concierge to make sure that passengers know all of their options.
“The agreed changes are intended to improve incomes and the work environment of taxi drivers,” ATA spokesman Manmohan Singh said.
Auckland Airport and ATA will hold quarterly meetings to discuss issues of concern.
