An ‘extra month’ for spirituality

You can earn beneficial spiritual returns by observing simple, recommended practices during the upcoming month of ‘Purushotham’ (August 18 to September 16, 2012).

‘Purushotham Maas’ (also known as ‘Adhik Maas’ and ‘Mal Maas’) is an ‘extra month’ included in the Lunar calendar every 2 ½ years to align it to the Solar calendar, which has 365 days in a year based on the Earth’s revolution around the Sun. The Lunar calendar has approximately 354 days in a year.

There are many stories that signify this extra month.

‘Purushotham,’ denoting Lord Krishna has a special significance to His followers and to Hindus.

It is believed that devotional activities undertaken during this month carry ‘rewards’ equivalent to 16,000 times compared to those obtained during normal times.

So what does one invest in this month to get these great returns?

Total dedication

One has to dedicate this month to please the Lord by hearing and chanting His glories, fasting and giving to charity, without expecting any material benefit.

In fact, one must not carry out any other religious rituals for personal benefit during this month.

Members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) would be conducting home programmes to facilitate those interested in observing this month. They would provide people with the opportunity to hear and chant the Lord’s glories and worship Him.

The home programmes are short and simple events, which do not require anything from the hosts, except their time. There is no cost involved.

All you have to do is to call Suhrt Krishna Das on (09) 8360576, Citra Krsna Das on (09) 8260014 or Poshak Madhava Das on (09) 8383575.
