Architectural excellence builds market confidence

Venkat Raman

The opening of the newly, purpose-built premises of Space Designers at 178 Pakuranga Road in East Auckland on February 2, 2018 was in every sense a proud moment for a couple, for this newspaper and this reporter.

For, it was an occasion that showcased what determination can achieve – wealth, not in just monetary terms but also translated into a long and ever-increasing number of satisfied clients, growing human capital and notably, well-wishers in the industry.

The Chief Architect of the occasion was Vivek Anturkar, Managing Director, Space Designers and his wife Sushama, who has been his life and business partner in managing the business and its wealth. It was gratifying for Indian Newslink and this reporter for they have been associated with the Anturkars since their arrival in New Zealand 16 years ago.

Good Start, God Speed

Following his school education, Mr Anturkar obtained a Civic Draughtsman Diploma from an Indian government educational institute in Mumbai in 1983.

The Diploma brought him to the crossroads of structural construction and architecture.

He chose architectural designing, a decision that kindled and challenges the creativity in him. It also designed the course of his destiny.

Tight employment market

A beginner’s life is always hard, especially in a sprawling metropolis like Mumbai where the construction industry has high dominance of tycoons, but Mr Anturkar has always been resilient with self-confidence and self-motivation. These qualities have kept in good stead.

His passion for architectural designing took him to many renowned architects in India, and each assignment was not only fulfilling but also tested his growing expertise.

It is time to enter the international scene and move to a foreign country, he thought.

Tough New Zealand

Migrating to New Zealand in July 2002, Mr Anturkar was confronted with two formidable situations – to cope with a construction industry that depended on timber and to find a job that would commensurate his qualifications and experience.

“The Auckland job market was tough, and I realised that I had to update myself of the rules and regulations, laws and codes and business and social practices in New Zealand. The architectural industry has stringent standards especially since risks relating to natural disasters are to be held in perspective,” Mr Anturkar said.

Saving Space

One of the most significant aspects of architectural designing is effective utilisation of space, especially in construction of homes.

Realising this need early, Mr Anturkar became increasingly conscious of combining aesthetic beauty optimising use of space. Keen on being known as an architectural designer with a difference, he pledged to himself to create ‘Space Designed’ homes.

Thus, the name of his enterprise, ‘Space Designers.’

His first house was in the East Auckland suburb of Howick.

“I told my client that his house was my first assignment in New Zealand, that I am new to the country and that I will ensure quality and efficiency. My client reposed trust and confidence in me. I am happy to he was fully satisfied with my work. That was eight years ago – an experience that I will never forget,” Mr Anturkar said.

Challenges today

He said the current housing crisis poses several serious challenges, the foremost of which is to design houses that would accrue maximum market value at minimum cost.

“It is equally important to ensure that every design is in line with modern concept of housing and complies with building and construction regulations of the central government and the conditions of the City Council.

“The houses designed by us will have no space wastage. I design every house as if it is my own, which motivates me to give my best attention and expertise. Our design will depend on the needs of customers, whether the houses are for owner-occupation or for rent. Accountability and transparency are the twin aspects of all our work,” Mr Anturkar said.

He said that Space Designers also works with major property developers including Fletcher Construction, Dreamline Homes and Signature Homes.

From its modest beginnings, Space Designers today is a busy operator in a crowded market. Mr Anturkar and his family of staff work tirelessly to help builders and owners to construct more homes and help ease the current housing shortage.

Mr Anturkar extended his invitation to Indian Newslink readers saying, “Please contact us for all requirements – whether you want to build a new house, expand or alter an existing home, develop your property or simply want to know the market potential of your home. We promise you quality service at all times. Nothing is too big or too small.”

The growth of Space Designers over the years has given credence to the belief that success always follows quality and hard work.

Four years ago, Space Designers bought the business from Jacques Buitendijk & Associates, which had an impressive record of 35 years in the industry.

“This acquisition has added value to our company,” Mr Anturkar said.
