A group of eight dancers from Singapore will perform at the Tamil New Year celebration in Auckland this weekend.

‘Rameshwara Group of Dance,’ will present Semi-Classical, Folk Modern Tamil film songs at the event being organised by Auckland Tamil Association at Freemans Bay Community Hall located at 52 Hepburn Street, Freemans Bay, Auckland City.

Ramesh Selvaraj, who started his performing career in 1994 is now in Auckland with his group of seven other dancers to present music and dance numbers at this weekend’s Tamil New Year celebration.

Passion for Showbusiness

Speaking to Indian Newslink earlier today, he said that showbusiness was always his passion and that every show is a challenge to improvise and improve.

“The crowning glory of our efforts occurred in 2005 when we won the ‘Best Dance Group Award’ at a competition held in Malaysia and again in 2007, when we were named ‘Champions 2007’ at an international dance competition at which highly professional groups from Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka participated. Since then, our journey has been filled with encouraging response from international audiences,” he said.

Born in a family of four children, Ramesh, the eldest of them, shuttles between Johor Bahru in Malaysia where he has a successful Wedding Decoration business and Singapore where his family lives. A bachelor, he fulfils his family responsibilities by tending to his father who has been ill for a length of time and his academic duties as a teacher three days a week.

“Establishing ‘Rameshwara Group of Dance’ in 1994 was a turning point in my career. There are no 30 professional performers in the Group. Although only seven of them have joined me on my current tour of New Zealand, they would demonstrate the Group’s proficiency as performers and entertainers,” he said.

Expect Energetic Evening

The Group will present Tamil film songs from the 1960s to the modem day, bringing back memories of a golden era and entertaining those who sway to today’s songs.

The Group performed at the Tamil New Year Celebrations of Wellington Mutamizh Sangam held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Memorial Theatre of Victoria University.

“We were overwhelmed by the warmth and friendliness of the members of the community in Wellington. We experienced the hospitality of New Zealanders and were inspired by the Maori culture. We will return for another show if our current discussions with Maori are successful,” Ramesh said.

Tickets for the show in Auckland on Saturday, April 28, 2018 are still on sale. The cost of ticket includes dinner.
