Beware of bank fee scam

If you have been receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be an Internal Affairs Department official keen to refund a bank fee, you should report the caller to the nearest Police Station.

The caller would say that he or she was from the Department and that the Department was holding bank fee money, which would be released on payment of a fee or tax.

A Department notification said such calls are part of an elaborate scam.

“Internal Affairs does not hold any bank fees for anyone, and has nothing to do with these callers. It does not ring people offering money for a fee.

“Anyone who is suspicious of a call purporting to be from Internal Affairs can ask for the caller’s name, and ring back on an Internal Affairs number published in the White Pages or on (04) 4957200,” the notification said.

The Department has alerted the Police about the scam, it added.
