Book tracks third generation Indo-Fijians

A third generation Indo-Fijians has chronicled the progress of his compatriots over the decades in his book, due to be released later this month.

Auckland based Pratap Chand has written the book titled, ‘A Fijian Memoir: Footprints of a Girmitiya’s Grandson,’ which also narrates his life and all the trials and tribulations that come with it.

David Reddy, Publicity Officer of the New Zealand Association of Fiji Teachers based in Auckland said that the Book chronicles the life of the author from his childhood in Tavua to Teachers College in Nasinu and follows his teaching career, his life as a unionist and finally his foray into politics as Education Minister in the deposed Labour Government of Mahendra Choudhary in May 2000.

“Mr Chand also discusses his wife’s illness and subsequent death, and his time as her caregiver,” he said.

According to him, ‘A Fijian Memoir’ is a unique narration of the third generation of Indo Fijians brought up among the cane fields, who embraced education to create professional careers for themselves and then serving their Mother country to bring prosperity.

“This Book will specially appeal to descendants of Girmitiyas, as they will be able to identify with the author’s life of struggles in early childhood and then pursuing education to improve their lot in a Third World country. It will also make an excellent Christmas gift, as well as something worthwhile for the younger generation interested in tracing their roots,” Mr Reddy said.

The book will be launched on Sunday, September 15 at 3 pm at Milton Hall, 23 Milton Road (off Buckland Road) in the South Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe.

The New Zealand Association of Fiji Teachers is supporting the launch ceremony, which is open to all.

Further details can be obtained from David Reddy on (09) 4788064 or (09) 2157906.
