Cantabrians mark Indian Independence Day

Christchurch Indian Social & Cultural Club (ISCC) and the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) celebrated the 66th Indian Independence Day on August 15.

The ISSC celebration began with Flag Hoisting in the Latimer Square at 730 am, with Nattu Rama raising the Indian Flag, followed by the Indian National Anthem. Present at the event were ISCC President Sandeep Sachdev, Secretary Paviter Noori, Executive committee and other guests, including former Labour MP and Christchurch Mayoral Candidate Lianne Dalziel.

The GOPIO celebration was held at the University of Canterbury.

GOPIO Christchurch Chapter President Dr Surinder Tandon hoisted the Indian Flag, while Secretary Archna Tandon and I addressed the gathering of students and staff.

Dr George Abraham is our South Island Correspondent based in Christchurch. He is a Member of the Executive Committee Member of the Canterbury Multicultural Council and a Candidate seeking Membership to the Canterbury District Health Board in the local elections scheduled to be held on October 12, 2013.
