The newly-formed Canterbury Indiya Tamil Sangam (Canterbury Indian Tamil Association) has announced that it would conduct its maiden event on August 24, 2019 to mark the 73rd Independence of India.
The Event
Association President Vijay Nainamalai said that the event will be held from 530 pm to 830 pm followed by dinner at Mohoao Hall Te Hapua Halswell Centre, located at 341 Halswell Road, Halswell, Christchurch.
“Canterbury Indiya Tamil Sangam is a not-for-profit organisation, committed to bring together Tamilians greater Canterbury region. It has been established to protect, promote and celebration Tamil Culture and Tradition,” he said.
India obtained independence from the British on August 15, 1947 following a bloodless revolution led by Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bala Gangadhar Tilak, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sarojini Naidu and other leaders.
Celebrations worldwide
Speeches, music and dance are on the cards as a number of organisations celebrate the 73rd Independence Day of India throughout New Zealand.
Festivities would be held for a week from August 15, the midnight on which India obtained freedom through peaceful means and after decades of struggle by freedom fighters and common people in India.
Post-Independent India has seen years of challenges, natural disasters and impressive progress with its teeming millions fostering one cherished concept: Democracy and Government of the People, By the People and For the People.
The country’s phenomenal progress since market reforms were introduced 28 years ago, more so since the current Bharatiya Janata Party Government led by Narendra Modi came to power after a stunning victory in the 2014 General Elections.
The Party excelled its performance in the 2019 General Elections held two months ago, attaining a thumping majority in Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) to govern on its own, with Mr Modi as the Prime Minister for a second contiguous term of five years.
