Chiropractors raise funds for Cancer Society

A South Auckland based company has once again proved the adage that small organisations can rise up to lofty social causes with concerted efforts.

The management and staff at Chiropractic & Sport Takanini raised $7664 for the New Zealand Cancer Society as a part of their Tenth Anniversary celebrations held recently.

The Company converted its birthday into an ‘Open Invitation Party’ at its clinic to mobilise finance for the Cancer Society.

Managing director Sandy Bansal said that Cancer affected most people in some way and hence there was a need for continuous and collective effort to raise awareness and finance.

“The Open Invitation Party’ was our way of acknowledging those that work to help us live with and understand cancer. The Cancer Society is an independent charity dedicated to ensuring availability of the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand and relies on donations and fund-raising events,” he said.

Members and volunteers of the Coerver Coaching New Zealand, who recently lost a coach to cancer, also helped in the fund drive.

Mr Bansal said the Coerver Kids Soccer demonstration team raised more than $150 within ten minutes and that Stu Greenway and Phil Parker, respectively Coerver New Zealand director and head coach presented the amount.

“It was a day of mixed emotions – remembrance of people and families affected by cancer and fun and laughter. The highlight of the day was a charity auction with items such as signed 2011 All Blacks and Warriors jerseys that attracted fierce bidding. The successful bidders walked away with what they considered bargains. The new owner of the All Black’s jersey was beaming with her $2000 purchase, which she described as priceless,” Mr Bansal said.

He said that the Clinic chose a different cause of charity each year and worked with the community to raise funds.

The Company raised about $5000 for the New Zealand Leukaemia and Blood Foundation in 2010, when all four chiropractors and a number of patients had their heads shaved.

“I am blown away by the generosity of people who donated prizes or products and helped out on the day. These events do not just happen; they take a lot of time and effort,” Mr Bansal said.

Chiropractic & Sport Takanini won in the ‘Best Sustainable Business’ category of the Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards 2009.

In their comments, judges said that they were impressed by the team culture and commitment (of the Company) to the local community and children.

“Their youth programmes for sports teams, young mothers and global athletes were outstanding. Fresh ideas and innovative thinking in community support is a strong indication of continued business sustainability,” they said.
