Cleaner inside on sexual offence

A Palmerston North cleaner has been obliged to serve nine months in prison on proven charges of possessing an objectionable publication.

Matthew James Hay (29) pleaded guilty to six charges, related to downloading sexually explicit images from the Internet.

The judge handed down his verdict on November 4.

An Internal Affairs investigation team, following a tip-off by the Luxembourg Police, traced the offender.

“New Zealand is committed to international efforts to help prevent the abuse of children and our inspectors are very active in tracking down collectors.

“If you deal in such material, you can expect to get caught as our dedicated inspectors have the expertise to catch offenders,” the Department’s Acting Deputy Secretary Craig Armitage said.

Luxembourg Police had supplied information to their New Zealand counterparts, saying that a number of New Zealanders had accessed a website offering images of young girls in sexually explicit poses and acts and downloaded images.

“Our censorship unit works with overseas agencies swapping intelligence about people using the Internet to traffic in objectionable material,” Mr Armitage said.
