Colour and costumes light up Christchurch

Although devastated by the September 4 Earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks, residents of Christchurch came out in large numbers to mark Diwali, the Festival of Lights at Victoria Park on October 17.

More than 9000 men, women and children representing almost all ethnic groups experienced the culture and cuisine that is unique to India and her people.

Ethnic Affairs Minister Pansy Wong, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and Indian High Commissioner Retired Admiral Sureesh Mehta were among the main guests.

What a party it was!

While Victoria Park was tastefully illuminated with decorations reminiscent of the Festival in India, people were seen in colour costumes, in the true spirit of Diwali.

Activities at the venue included food stalls, dancing lessons, henna (hand painting) and various types of entertainment.

The Festival began with ‘Ranga Pooja’ dance, which we believe, was a majestic way of introducing Diwali to Christchurch. A number of local performances presented classical, semi-classical and Bollywood items.

However, the highlight of the event was a Magic Show by Uday Jadugar and a Rajasthani Folk dance by artistes flown from India through the Indian Council of Cultural Relations of the Indian Government, organised by the Wellington based Indian High Commission.

As a part of the official ceremony, the dignitaries were escorted to the stage in a Thallapoli procession, with 20 young women in traditional costumes and jewellery, each carrying a lamp to symbolise Diwali.

Later, a raffle draw with two return tickets to India was held.
