Concert to pay homage to youngster

Concert to pay- Tarun Naicker.jpgMusic, dance, laughter and fun will be among the features of an evening of entertainment at the Avondale College Auditorium on June 26.

Had Tarun Naicker been alive, that would have been the same venue to celebrate his 21st birthday. But fate intervened and took him away, as a victim of a traffic accident on April 23, 2010 along the South Western Motorway in Auckland.

His family and friends, in a mark of respect and memory for the departed soul, would ‘celebrate Tarun’s life’ with an evening of melody.

Tears would no doubt roll down several hundred pairs of eyes, for the promise of a youngster to become somebody in this country and the world remains unfulfilled. Destiny has a cruel way of demonstrating its ruthlessness.

Born in Ballarat in (Victoria) Australia, Tarun moved to his native Fiji to pursue his education, before migrating to New Zealand. In Auckland, he completed a foundation programme at the University of Auckland and had commenced his graduate degree (BA) course in Science at the AUT University.

Says his cousin Doreen Joshi, who is among those arranging the concert:

“He was a social butterfly and took part in several extracurricular activities. His mother Kamal Rajan described him as a ‘fun-loving boy who knew how to balance in life,’ while his father Karna said, ‘Tarun had an ever-expanding circle of friends.’

“He was your average boy at the brink of manhood, enjoying soccer, music and dancing. He always dressed well, picky with his food but never overly concerned with materialistic things in life.”

His friends launched the RIP Tarun Naicker Group on Facebook, which within days attracted 3411 members. He is known as ‘The Angel.’

Tickets to the concert are priced at $5, with the proceeds earmarked for a worthy cause. But Doreen wants to establish a Charitable Trust in memory of Tarun.

“Funds are aimed to contribute towards many causes, including a part scholarship to study Performing Arts at a reputed facility in Auckland. Students of Aorere College, where Tarun studied, would be considered first for the scholarship,” she said.
