Conference to discuss refugees in New Zealand

Call for Papers from University of Otago

Staff Reporter

What are the challenges that refugees face after they are approved to stay in New Zealand? Are they able to secure employment, integrate into the mainstream and progress in life? Do they get jobs? Do they get community support?

These and many other questions are expected to be discussed at a two-day conference scheduled to be held in Dunedin on November 6 and 7, 2018.

Topics for Papers

Associate Professor Jacqui Leckie of the Centre for Global Migrations at the University said that the organisers of the Conference are seeking 30-minute papers that consider any aspect of refugee resettlement in Urban New Zealand.

“This could include housing, education, health and language. Most former refugees to New Zealand are resettled in cities. But how do specific urban areas influence refugee resettlement? What opportunities and challenges surround such aspects as housing, education, health and language provision? This two-day conference seeks to examine refugee resettlement in New Zealand by bringing together academics, policymakers, NGOs, practitioners, former refugees, and the general public,” she said.

Papers must be submitted as Word documents, typed in Times New Roman 12 point font on or before August 1, 2018.
