Dances promote cultural rhapsody

Dances promote- Sonam Arora.jpgA traditional dance programme, bringing to the fore the cultural heritage of India, promises to be an event for the entire family.

Auckland based Shri Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan of New Zealand Inc is organising Chak de Dandiya on July 10 at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Mt Eden in aid of its temple project.

‘Dandiya Raas’ is one of the most prominent and devotional dances in which men and women participate in celebration of Dussehra (Navaratri) every year.

Hindus perform dance numbers, in praise of Goddess Durga (‘Shakti’ or ‘Power’), who is said to have vanquished, ‘Mahishasura,’ a Demon King, who terrorised the world with his evil deeds. Dandiya is also known as ‘Sword Dance,’ with the sticks representing the sword.

People also pay obeisance to Lord Rama (an Avatar of Vishnu), who conquered Ravana, the Sri Lankan King, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

Dandiya Raas originated in rural India and quickly became an important aspect of traditional and folk dances.

DJ Dave from the Auckland based ‘Aja Nachle,’ will be an added attraction at the forthcoming event. Entry tickets are now available (free for children under five years of age).

The Sansthan hopes to raise substantial funds through such programmes in aid of its Temple project.
