Dedicated refugees add employment value

Refugees are a special group of people who need sympathy, understanding and most important of all, opportunities to prove themselves.

A majority of them come from adverse circumstances but contrary to popular belief, they do not wish to remain on taxpayer-funded benefits but want to be gainfully employed.

Rising above expectations, many refugees have excelled themselves in any job that has come their way. Organisations like the Wellington based Multicultural Learning, Support Services (MCLaSS) have been helping a number of refugees who have successfully completed bridge courses, and other programmes held throughout the year.

Employers who provide job opportunities to such refugees have seldom been disappointed. In fact, many of them recommend other employers to ‘give these guys a chance to succeed.”

Among them was Gilmer Serviced Apartments General Manager Rahul Dev.

“You need to provide proper training, but don’t be afraid. These people are keen to learn. They are not here just to show their face. They are dedicated workers,” he said after a pleasant experience with employing refugees.

Mr Dev was impressed with the work ethic of the staff hired through MCLaSS.

“They never fail to turn up at work on time, an important factor in this industry. They are dedicated because they are here for a purpose. They do not muck around. Every single person that has come through MCLaSS to work for us has been very efficient,” he said.

Fisherman’s Table Restaurant Manager Mauricio Torrealba, agreed, saying that refugees were loyal to their jobs and employers.

“They are happy to gain a job. They never fail,” he said.

Mr Dev admitted that he was apprehensive in the beginning.

“There is a risk factor with someone who is not pre-trained and has no experience. But I took the risk and it paid off,” he said.
