Devotional melody pours on Lord Ganesha

Bhakthi (Devotion) and Sangeeth (Music) merged in Divinity at Bhakthi Varsha, an evening of devotional music in Auckland last month.

The event, held on September 13 at Sri Ganesh Temple in the Southern suburb of Papakura was a fundraiser to construct the Rajagopuram (Temple Tower) and the associated Maha Kumbhabhishekam (Temple Consecration).

The 12-year-old Temple has been attracting thousands of devotees from various parts of the country and with a number of religious festivals, weddings and other social events held throughout the year, this Citadel needs to not only have a ‘complete look’ but also better amenities and services.

Talented group

The singers led by Shriram Iyer (now based in Melbourne), included Arpita Chand, Jyoti Rajesh, Jayasree Sitaraman and Arun Khotkar (who also played on the Harmonium), with accompanying artistes Dr Ashok Malur (Violin), Vivek Anturkar (Tabla) and Hemant Thaker (Keyboard).

While the songs were mainly light music Bhajans from feature films and albums, Arun added flavour by presenting a few Abhangs.

After having presented successful Bollywood music evenings, the ensemble group combined their talents to present devotional songs in Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi and Malayalam.

Dances presented by student of Anuradha School of Indian Dances and Vatsala Balachandran earlier in the evening added colour to the event.
