Eid warms hearts amidst damp weather

It may have been a cold and overcast day in some parts of New Zealand on August 19 but the depressing weather did not dampen the spirit of Muslims as they marked the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan and celebrated Eid Al Fitr.

Men, women and children were seen at Mosques, shopping malls, parks and other places of interest, donning new clothes, generally associated with Eid.

“Let there be peace and May God keep you and your family happy and prosperous,” were the words that emanated from all of them, as if on a cue.

Among the highlights of Eid Al Fitr this year was the participation of Hindus, Christians and others, visiting the homes of their Muslim friends, exchanging sweets and gifts.

Such is the spirit of Islam that fraternal feelings transcend religious beliefs and vicissitudes. Social status and income levels hardly enter the equation and the mood is one of gaiety and fun.

Prime Minister John Key led a team of parliamentarians and government officials in greeting Muslims at a special function held in the Grand Hall of Parliament in Wellington on August 21, 2012 (see separate story in this Section).
