Employers praised for migrant support

Mary Collie-Holmes, the Centre’s Manager, said that the management of the Wellington City Council, Hutt City New World, Nikau Café and Golden Lotus Restaurant had consistently supported the efforts of migrants in general and refugees in particular to become economically independent and pursue their career in various vocations.

She said that while the Centre’s Support Team helps migrants and refugees to make career choices and find employment, employers played a critical role in providing opportunities to such job seekers.

She said Wellington City Council has employed 16 MCLaSS skilled migrant clients since 2005, including three persons in 2010, many through its work experience programme.

“The Council strives hard to attract skilled migrants to Wellington provides them information to settle well. With this programme, they are actually walking the talk,” she said.

Ms Collie-Holmes said that since 2006, Nikau Café at the Central Library had employed 11 of the Centre’s clients, including two persons in 2010.

“The Cafe has always worked with our employment support team to forestall employment issues and resolve them if they arise,” she said.

She said the Café was a source of encouragement for refugees to seek employment and begin a new life in New Zealand.

According to Ms Collie-Holmes, Hutt City New World has been providing MCLaSS clients with work experience, which is a valuable step towards paid employment.

“Several people who learnt English at MCLaSS began their career at the Golden Lotus Restaurant in Brooklyn.

Officials of the four companies received Certificates of Appreciation at the ceremony.
