Exhibition tracks history of social bodies

A photographic exhibition tracing the history of a number of Papatoetoe based community and religious organisations attracted the attention of a large number of guests and visitors last month.

The Papatoetoe Historical Society organised the Exhibition at the Papatoetoe Chambers from July 25 to 27 to provide a pictorial glimpse of how a number of organisations have grown in the service of the concerned communities.

Raj Bedi, an Educator at the Society, coordinated the event with the support of Nimi Bedi, Senior Community Development Facilitator at the Auckland Council.

Among the organisations that participated in the exhibition were the Attainable Trust, Auckland Sikh Society, Buddhist Charitable Trust, Chanting Wheel Culture Exchange, Hope ‘n’ Help Charitable Trust, Kadampa Buddhist Charitable Trust, Kuk Punjabi Samachar, Manukau Indian Association, Manukau Seniors Association Inc, New Zealand Punjabi Cultural Association, Papatoetoe Central Seniors Association Inc, Papatoetoe Historical Society and Shree Swaminarayan Temple.

Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board John McCracken inaugurated the exhibition, while Kaumatua Jim Rauwhero blessed the occasion.

A number of speakers spoke about their respective associations and their efforts to promote social harmony and cultural unity. Among them were David Chen, Kulwant Kaur, Nalini Bateriwala, Prithipal Singh Basra, Ram Milan and Ranjna Patel.

A quiz for children was a highlight of the programme.
