Festival of Lights in South Island

The Indian community is gaining popularity in the South Island, encouraging community groups to organise cultural and religious festivals.

Christchurch based Indian Social & Cultural Club will mark Diwali along with other Indian community groups at the Victoria Square on October 17.

Club Vice-President for Cultural Events Thomas Kurian told Indian Newslink that the Christchurch City Council is a major sponsor of Diwali Mela 2010.

“This is the first of its kind for the Indian community, with a budget of $55,000. The organising committee is keen to enlist the sponsorship of commercial organisations, social and community groups and individuals to make it a grand festival,” he said.

Mr Kurian said more than 15,000 people were expected to attend the festival.

“The festivities will include food, arts and craft stalls, cultural and folk dances and Bollywood music and dance.
