Festival to mark India’s Independence

Radio Tarana will mark India’s Independence Day with a festival of entertainment, cuisine, heritage and fun on Saturday, August 17 at the Vodafone Arena (formerly known as Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre) on Great South Road in Manukau.

Although the actual date of India’s Independence is on August 15, this Festival has been organised over the following weekend to enable people to spend more time with each other, their families and communities, while enjoying an amicable environment.

Radio Tarana Managing Director Robert Khan said that the objective of the Festival is to bring together people and promote solidarity and sobriety among the members of the Indian community in New Zealand.

“While our immediate country of origin may be anywhere in the world, our roots go back to India, the land of our ancestors. Indians work hard and promote economic development and social progress wherever they live. Independence Day is an event to rejoice and be proud of a time-honoured culture and heritage,” he said.

He said that community and social clubs, associations, and groups, and religious organisations can promote their activities with their presence at the Festival.

“We will provide each of them with a stall or a stand at no cost. We will consider them as our partners and acknowledge them at the opening ceremony and in all our publicity campaigns. Radio Tarana is organising the Festival to mark the 67th Independence Day of India with the support of a number of organisations for the benefit of the community. Entry to the day-long Festival is free for all,” Mr Khan said.

Among the partners in the Project are Auckland Indian Retailers Association, Indian Newslink, Madison Shipping, Mercury Energy, Radio Spice, Shanti Niwas Trust and Toyota New Zealand.

“The Festival will be held from 12 pm to 6 pm and will include amusement for children, food, craft and trade stalls. Our free invitation is for all Indians and friends of the community to celebrate the anniversary of Independence of the world’s largest democracy and showcase our vibrant culture,” Mr Khan said.
