Fifth Golden edition of songs coming

Buoyed by increasing public demand, one of the most popular musicians of our times in New Zealand is bringing together local talent to present an evening of melody and charm next month.

Amit Sengupta and his Mohammed Rafi Academy of Music will present the fifth edition of ‘Old is Gold,’ with a team of 20 singers and instrumentalists at the Dorothy Winstone Centre of the Auckland Girls Grammar School on September 22, 2012. Over the years, he has donated more than $26,000 to the Starship Foundation, collected through music shows and personal loans taken from commercial banks, displaying his responsibility to the communities in general and good care of children in particular.

“The forthcoming, ‘Old is Gold (V)’ will commence with a homage to Rajesh Khanna who passed away recently in Mumbai. He was the first Superstar of the Hindi cinema and many songs picturised on him were hits,” Mr Sengupta said.

This homage would include immortal songs such as ‘Ao Na Gale Lagalo Na,’ ‘O Mere Dil Ki Chain’ (Mere Jeevan Saathi), ‘Kya Janu Sajan’ (Baharo Ke Sapne) and ‘Kahin Door Jab’ (Anand).

“The three-hour programme will feature 11 singers from Auckland, rendering 29 memorable songs taken from a number of Hindi films. Each of them, including the nine-member orchestra will strive to give their best performance to make it a memorable evening,” Mr Sengupta said.

Apart from him, the singers include Akhila Puthigae, Ashish Joshi, Karamveer Singh, Kanika Diesh, Moneesh Mittal, Reah Maheswari, Rachit Bhatia, Ritika Shah, Siddharth Krishnamoorthy and Vidya Teke.

The orchestra would feature Amit Sengupta (Harmonium), Anthony Yempee (Lead Guitar), Diya Anthony (Rhythm Guitar), Govind Prabhu (Khol & Mridangam), Hemant Thaker (Key Board), Joscel Alexander (Acoustic Drums), Joseph Alexander (Electronic Drums), Peter Paul Ravela (Tabla & Dholak) and Shivam Padeyachi (Base Guitar).

Mr Sengupta said the songs would reflect the melodious Bollywood of yesteryears. We have selected songs that have popularised singers, actors, music directors, lyricists, movies, producers and directors. Our selection would comprise ‘Tere Pyar Me Dildar’ (Mere Mehboob), ‘Dil Kya Kare Jab Kissise,’ (Julie), ‘Do Lafzon Ki Hai’ (The Great Gambler), ‘Tujhse Naraj’ (Masoom), ‘Kahin Be Khayal Hokar’ (Teen Deviyan) and ‘Mere Pyare Bindoo’ (Padosan). Ujjal Ghose and Rajesh Maharaj will be the Masters of Ceremonies,” he said.
