Fiji keen to host World Golf meet

Fiji has expressed its interest to host a leg of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour next year at the Intercontinental Golf and Spa Resort at Natadola.

Youth and Sport Minister Commander Viliame Naupoto said that his officials would meet with the PGA officers shortly and place the country’s bid.

“The PGA Tour will see top golfers playing for the first time in Fiji. Golf is a big sport around the globe and we are very proud to have the Fiji flag flying high in the golfing world, thanks to our own former World number 1, Vijay Singh,” he said, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Nadi Inter-Primary School Golf Competition at the Novotel Golf Course in Nadi last week.

The Golf course in Natadola was designed by Vijay Singh.

Commander Naupoto, a golf enthusiast, told the students of the important lessons taught by the game.

“It teaches you to be honest and disciplined and instils in you integrity. It is not a noisy sport but promotes good sportsmanship as you see competitors acknowledging good shots,” he said.

“However, winning is not on the cards. It is a bonus. What you need to do is to give your best every time you do something, just as in school.”
