Five professionals picked for Business Scholarship

Five professionals of proven expertise and talent have been chosen to receive Prime Minister’s Business Scholarships this year.

The recipients, three of them from Christchurch, will each receive up to $110,000 to cover about 50% of the costs related to higher study at an internationally reputed institution.

The Gough Group General Manager (Strategic Development) Ben Gough, Tait Radio Communications Global Chief Marketing Officer James Kyd, McVicar Timber Group Limited Chief Executive Officer John McVicar (all from Christchurch), Comvita Limited Chief Supply Chain Manager Nevin Amos (Te Puke, Bay of Plenty) and Beca Infrastructure Limited General Manager (Transportation) Matthew Ensor (Auckland) are the recipients of the 2011 Scholarships.

They would pursue advanced study in a chosen field at Harvard Business School, the London Business School or the INSEAD, known as The Business School of the World.’

Prime Minister John Key said the Scholarships afforded a great opportunity not only for the individuals concerned but also for New Zealand, as they would return with greater skills.

Launching the Scholarship last year, Mr Key had said that the Scheme was designed to complement the existing Prime Minister’s Science Prizes, which were helping to raise the profile and prestige of Science.

“We want the Business Scholarships to have a similar impact in the business world by providing senior managers and executives access to top overseas business programmes.

“The aim is to build the capability of our businesses and help make New Zealand more internationally competitive. It is expected that applicants would come from firms looking to export more,” he had said.
