Flash Mob promotes Power Shift meet

Amid the lunchtime throng of business people on Queen Street in Auckland’s CBD, a Gangham style flash mob materialized on October 11.

Businessmen and women were caught unawares but the orange-clad performers were a welcome distraction from the usual monotony of the Thursday lunch break.

The students and young professionals zipped around on electric bikes, creating a real buzz for the synchronised dance.

Sam Dyson, an orgainser of the event, said, “We are here to show our unity and power in tackling climate change leading up to New Zealand’s biggest climate summit, ‘Power Shift,’ due to be held in Auckland this December.”

The action was to raise awareness for Power Shift, the country’s biggest youth climate summit brought by Generation Zero and ‘350’ Aotearoa.

Generation Zero is a youth climate action movement and 350 are an international climate organisation founded in the US.

Ryan Mearns, a Generation Zero member, said, “If Power Shift is anything as exciting as that flash mob, then get me there now!”

Power Shift will bring together young people passionate about making a difference at the University of Auckland from December 7 to 9, 2012.

New Zealand youth are responding to the need for urgent action on climate change in a positive and solutions-based manner, to empower youth to secure their generation a safe climate future.

Inspirational speakers like Lucy Lawless will participate in workshops, presentations and a flash mob.

The event will also witness the launch of the 2013 Climate Campaign.
