Free speech constraints affect Maori and Pacifica

Auckland, August 10, 2018
Maori and Pacifica have become the victims in the restrictions to Free Speech, New Conservative Party Deputy Leader Elliot Ikilei said.
Last night at the University of Auckland, a lively debate took place between supporters of a culture of free speech and those defending the PC culture.
Elliot Ikilei, while not getting quite the protesters’ attention that Dr Don Brash got, stole the show with his argument supporting Free Speech, emphasising the patronising impacts of current members of government endorsing a restriction to access of information.
“We don’t need protection from free speech,” he said.
The Hate Speech
The debate came on the back of some weeks of public conjecture about what is deemed hate speech and what is held up to be the right of individuals to speak freely.
The Prime Minister spoke last night of her great frustration with the appointment of Wally Haumaha as Deputy Police Commissioner because all the information was not on the table before the appointment was made.
It is for this reason access to information has been highlighted by Mr Ikilei, and in recent weeks growing support for this position has gained momentum.
“Yes, Prime Minister. That is why Free Speech is so important to all New Zealanders If all the information is not on the table, wrong decisions are made. We have, not just the right to hear all the data, but the absolute need to hear it all,” Mr Ikilei said.
