We are happy to announce that Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former Governor of the Indian State of West Bengal and the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and Chakravarthy Rajagopalachari (the first and the last Governor-General of independent India) will be present at the Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards (IBA) Ceremony this year.
He will be among the other Guests of Honour including the country’s leaders at the Awards Night scheduled to be held on Monday, November 19, 2012 at the Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland.
He will also be the Guest Speaker at this year’s Mother Teresa Interfaith Meeting on Sunday, November 18 at the Catholic Church of Christ the King in Mt Roskill at the invitation of Catholic Bishop of Auckland Diocese Patrick Dunn and the Mother Teresa Interfaith Committee.
Mr Gandhi said that he deemed it an honour to be invited to speak at the Mother Teresa Interfaith Meeting and at the Indian Newslink IBA Awards Ceremony.
A postgraduate in Literature from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi, he has had a distinguished career in various capacities representing the Indian Government in India and overseas. As an officer of the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), he served in his home State of Tamil Nadu and later as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Lesotho and Sri Lanka and Ambassador to Norway, with concurrent accreditation to a number of other countries.
He also served as the Secretary to the Vice-President of India and later as the Secretary to the President of India.
He was the Governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009. He also held the additional charge as the Governor of Bihar in 2006.
He has written a number of books including, ‘Gandhi and South Africa.’
Mother Teresa Interfaith Committee Chairman Wenceslaus Anthony said that New Zealanders would have the good fortune of listening to a great personality at two important events in Auckland this November.
“The intellectual and historical legacy of Dr Gopalkrishna Gandhi being the grandson of the Father of the Nation and the first Governor General of Independent India gave him an opportunity to be privy to the lore by bonds of kinship. He also had access to a range of persons and sources by dint of his ambassadorial, diplomatic, gubernatorial and authorial roles,” he said.
More information about Mr Gandhi and details of his visit will appear in our ensuing editions.
