Guidelines for businesses under Alert Two

Supplied Content
Wellington, May 9, 2020

The Prime Minister will announce on Monday, May 11, 2020 the government’s decision on moving to Alert Level 2.

Businesses must self-assess their ability to meet the rules and operate safely, just as they would normally meet their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Government agencies will not make these decisions for businesses.

More detailed information for businesses operating at Alert Level 2 is currently being developed.

It will be published here as soon as it is available.

Guidance for workplaces

This guidance provides high-level details on what workplace activities are permitted at different Alert Levels.

The measures may be updated based on (a) new scientific knowledge about Covid-19 (b) information about the effectiveness of control measures in New Zealand and overseas (c) the application of Alert Levels at different times (e.g. the application may be different depending on if New Zealand is moving down or up Alert Levels).

Golden Rules for business

Do everything you can to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission at work; we all have a part to play in keeping each other safe.

Covid-19 is still out there. Play it safe.

All businesses can operate if they can do so safely.

Alternative ways of working are still encouraged where possible.

Talk with your workers to identify risks and ways to manage them.

Ask everyone, workers, contractors and customers, with cold or flu-like symptoms to stay away from your premises.

Keep groups of customers on metre apart.

Keep contact-tracing records of anyone who will have close interaction (workers, contractors or customers).

Reduce the number of shared surfaces, and regularly disinfect them.

Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands.

Guidelines at all Levels

At all Alert Levels, businesses need to meet all public health guidelines.

These include the following, although they may change over time: (a) Regular disinfecting of surfaces (b) Encouraging good hand hygiene by allowing frequent hand washing and sanitising (c) Not having sick people in the workplace (d) Meeting physical distancing requirements.

Visit covid19.govt.nz for the full public health guidance and restrictions on activities (external link) at different alert levels.

The Ministry of Health also has infectious disease control advice for workplaces (external link).

WorkSafe has guidance on COVID-19 health and safety planning (external link), as well as general guidance on health and safety.

If a business determines it cannot operate safely, or make the necessary changes to do so, it should not open.

Industry organisations will also be issuing specific guidance for certain sectors and kinds of workplaces. These are available on the WorkSafe website.

If in doubt, you can contact WorkSafe, your industry organisation or your local chamber of commerce or BusinessNZ.
