Hamilton Nadi snatch Waikato Fiji Cup

The Hamilton Nadi team took the Waikato Fiji Cup at the final match held in Hamilton over the Labour weekend.

The team defeated a star studded Hamilton Suva 1 Nil in the semifinal, played the Hamilton Somali United who had earlier defeated Rotorua Fiji by three goals to one.

The Hamilton Nadi side, with the services of former national reps Valerio Nawatu, Ravinesh Narayan and former Nadi reps Rajnesh Sharma and Tilesh Naidu went on to win two goals to one in the final.

Valerio Nawatu scored the opening goal in the final and was also awarded with MVP trophy.

Good representation

Organised by the Waikato Fiji Association to bring together the Fiji community in the Waikato region, the Waikato Fiji Cup matches witnessed nine teams this year including those from Auckland, Rotorua and Hamilton.

Hamilton Nadi also won the Waikato Bay of Plenty IDC five times in a row since the inception of the Waikato-based competition only to came short last year to eventual winners Hamilton Ba in the semis.

They are the most successful Waikato Fiji side.

According to the Manager Kamal Nair, this Tournament was a good build up for the upcoming IDC and Battle of Giants in Hamilton.

“A majority of our players originate form Nadi as WBOP IDC and BOG are played in Strict State of Origin Rules and the boys play for district pride,” he said.
