Hamiltonians can expect quality Indian food and entertainment at the Diwali Festival 2011, scheduled to be held from 4 pm on October 22, 2011.
Indianz Global is organising the event at Garden Place, which was inaugurated by Hamilton Mayor Julie Haraker last month.
Described as the ‘City Heart Project,’ Garden Palace has rejuvenated and beautified Hamilton for residents and visitors.
Ms Haraker inaugurated the venue on September 15, which included the opening of an ice rink by Douglas Webber Group, live music and the new Garden Palace fountain, turned on for the first time.
“There has been some controversy about the work in Garden Place, but this re-opening is a time to put that behind us and for everyone to celebrate and enjoy Hamilton’s main public square. It was also timed well with the first Rugby World Cup 2011 match in Hamilton, and weekend events. This is terrific for Hamilton,” she said, prior to the official opening.
A Matariki-themed sculpture will be installed later this year.
Indianz Global President Suman Kapoor said the Garden Palace will benefit all resident communities and businesses.
She said ‘Children and Youth’ will be the theme of this year’s Festival.
“The Indian community has taken the initiative to celebrate Diwali in the spirit of oneness with several groups invited to present their cultural items. With stalls selling food, arts and crafts and other products, Diwali 2011 will truly be a community event,” she said.
She said henna, workshops, display of literature, ice skating rink and glimpses of Diwali celebrations from various parts of the world will be among the other highlights.
