Hardship creates the will to succeed

It happens all the time – children raised in a family of modest economic background, grow up to be responsible adults, seek good vocations and become models for the contemporary and future generations. Hardships do not deter them and hard work motivates them to do better.

Our Model of the fortnight Zakereen Jahan is among the gems of the community that shine with confidence and hope for a better morrow.

Born in Fiji, she moved with her family when she had just stepped into her teens. Like many youngsters of her age, Zakereen would also have liked to hang out with friends, enjoy life and make merry day after day.

Teenage career

However, that was not to be. With limited income brought home by her father, the family had to struggle to make ends meet. It was therefore inevitable that the teenager began to earn a living when she was just 15 years old.

Zakereen says that her father has been a source of great inspiration in her life.

“He has shown me that hard work, loyalty and being kind to yourself and others take you a long way. I started my part-time job to help the family to bring another source of income, pay for my education. In the process, I have learnt to be independent and acquired the ability of carrying myself through life with confidence,” she said.

She will soon graduate with a Business degree, with accounting as her major subject. She would hopefully make the grade in the profession, having learnt the art of customer relationship as the Assistant Manager at an international fast food store.

Life’s lessons

Zakereen is also interested in modelling as the accompanying pictures testify and considers herself fortunate to have been awarded the title of ‘Miss Photographic Model’ by photographer Bhikhu Bhula.

“My experience at Miss Indianz has taught several lessons, one of which was to realise that anything can be achieved if one concerts sincere efforts. The time I had spent with the contestants made me appreciate such moments in life and I will forever cherish them,” she said.

This young woman is keen travel around the world, visit new places and meet new people.

“I would love to undertake adventure trips such as a safari in Africa. I like to go out and explore, step out of boundaries and achieve my heart’s desire. I hope everyone remains happy because life is too short to dwell on what other people expect from you,” she said.
