The Bay of Plenty is being warned to expect heavy rain and potentially rising rivers and flooding.

The Metservice issued a severe weather warning for the bay, this morning saying that an active trough was moving slowly east but should weaken in the afternoon.

“The trough is embedded in a moist northerly flow and is delivering heavy rain,” forecaster William Nepe said.

High intensity

Up to 100mm of rain could fall between 7am and 3pm and it could reach intensities of 40mm per hour.

“People in this region are advised to look out for rapidly rising rivers and streams, and also surface flooding,” Mr Nepe said.

The warning comes about seven weeks after the town of Edgecumbe was evacuated after the local river breached the stopbank following heavy rain brought by the remnants of tropical cyclone Debbie.

Meanwhile, the threat of widespread heavy rain in the ranges of northwest Nelson has passed and the warning for that area has been lifted.
