Hindu Deities inspire Wellington artist

The creative talents of a local artist that included a number of Hindu Deities captivated visitors to the Pixel Ink Gallery in Wellington last fortnight.

The works of Kelly Spencer included T Shirt graphics, poster designs and various other forms of visual art.

She called her exhibition ‘Deva,’ inspired by the magnificent iconography and imagery of the Hindu Devas and Avatars, which she saw during her visit to Laos last year.

“I approach this subject matter from a purely artistic stance. The elaborate characters of Hinduism transfixed me. There is a richness and vibrancy to the culture that we do not often encounter in the West,” she said.

Ms Spencer is a freelance artist with no formal training, which works to her advantage. She enjoys the freedom to create her own style, free from the well-trodden path of formal art education.

She moonlights in graphics, book illustrations and other artistic designs. Her works were exhibited in Wellington at a number of venues last year, including Deluxe Cafe and Thistle Hall Community gallery.

Her exhibits will be shown shortly at Mint Gallery in Georgia, Atlanta (US).
