A Prima Donna in the making

Walking down the isle and walking away with fame and fortune may appear to be a piece of cake for ‘bird watchers’ but for performers it could be a nightmare. For, beyond all those spotlights and behind all those pancakes, there lurks a doubt in the minds of youngsters if they are doing the right thing.

“You must have a passion for fashion before stepping on to the ramp,” says Kartika Singh, our Model of the Fortnight, adding, “You could have the best of looks and patroange but you would be zilch if you do not show devotion and dedication.”

Giving the best in what she does has been the wont of this Waitakere College (Form 6) student since her formative years. Moving from her native Nadi in Fiji with her parents (her father is a chef) and brother (a student at the AUT University), Kartika has been busy in her own way with her own dreams.

She entered the ‘Indian Diva 2008’ contest where she was declared the Second Runner-up. Not satisfied, she entered the contest again this year and walked away with the ‘Indian Diva 2009’ tile.

Her penchant for dancing offered a role as choreographer at the Polyfest and Rockers festivals in West Auckland, which she said, “was most satisfying.”

Kartika apparently beleives in being self-sufficient, which is why she works part time at a fast food restaurant in a shopping mall after school hours and on weekends.

“I want to pursue a graduate course in Early Childhood Education at the University. I have one more year to complete school and I just can’t wait,” she said.

It is often said that ambition motivates a person to do his or her best in every endeavour and chase excellence. Teenagers like Karthika could well personify that statement.
