Advisory to students
The Indian Government has issued an advisory to students going overseas to foster their safety and security.
The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has issued a series of ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ to Indian students bound for Australia, and although New Zealand has not been included, the advice will be useful for students here as well.
The Ministry has advised students not to walk alone at night especially in some parts of main cities and that those doing so out of necessity, should remain in well-lit areas and check out the route properly.
“Make sure that someone knows where you are going and at what time you are expected to return and do not carry more cash than necessary.
“Do not make it obvious that you are in possession of electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, iPods or laptops,” the statement said.
The Government has also advised students to carry their identity card or document that identifies them at all times and keep important documents such as passports, university papers, items of value and cash in a safe place.
The statement also advised students of the precautions to be taken prior to pursuing overseas education.
These included selecting the right course at the right institution, assessing the location, checking English language proficiency requirements, identifying known persons studying in the city or the institution and similar facts.
“Students must ensure that they have a written agreement with the institution before paying any fees and estimate all costs,” it said.
