Business Council opens- Sir Richard Hadlee.jpgWellington based India New Zealand Business Council has established a chapter in Christchurch, its first branch outside the capital.

The launch ceremony was held on November 26 and a detailed report will appear with photographs in our next issue.

He said Cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee, a resident of Christchurch, had accepted the Council’s invitation to be its Patron and that Christchurch based businessman Robert Baker will lead the new Chapter.

The Council has played a significant role in connecting businesses in India and New Zealand and was a participant in the Joint Study Group meetings held between the two Governments in the lead up to the negotiations for a free trade agreement.

Business Council opens-Wenceslaus Anthony.jpgCouncil Chair Wenceslaus Anthony said the Christchurch Chapter will enable South Island members to enhance their activities and promote the objectives of the organisation.

“Exports to India have increased dramatically in the past two years, much of which were from coal, milk powder and logs from businesses based in South Island.

“Several hi-tech industries in and around Christchurch also have an interest in the Indian market,” he said.

Mr Anthony said, Jade Software Corporation Limited, a specialist technology research and development organisation, will be giving a presentation to the Council’s members and guests at the Chapter launch.

“There is increased level of interest among New Zealand companies to do business with India with the prospects of negotiations for FTA and the recovery of the Indian economy from the adverse effects of global recession.

“Our Christchurch Chapter will be well positioned to offer support and assistance to businesses,” Mr Anthony said.

Further information can be obtained from him on 0274-833676 or from Fergus McLean, Executive Director of the Council on 0275-718 178.
