Each scholarship is worth $5000.

The Government provided $4 million for the scheme in its 2009 budget.

University of Auckland and University of Otago account for the largest number of scholarships (400 each), followed by Victoria University (350), University of Canterbury (200), University of Waikato (100) and AUT University, Lincoln University and Massey University (50 each).

A notification said that the recipient universities would match the amount invested by the Education Ministry.
