Labour selects Phil Twyford for Te Atatu

Auckland December 18 Phil Twyford has been selected as Labour’s candidate to contest the Te Atatu electorate in next year’s general election.

Chris Carter, who was ousted by Labour in August, has been the elected MP from this electorate since 1999.

Mr Twyford won the nomination at a meeting of the Local Electorate Committee today. Senior Vice-President Moira Coatsworth said there were eight top nominees making themselves available to represent Labour in Te Atatu, but in the end, Phil Twyford emerged the winner.“I am humbled that local party members have chosen me ahead of a group of talented candidates to represent them and Labour at the next election.

Today we start the journey to winning Te Atatu and winning back government and  I invite all the candidates and others in this hall to join me and the party members in Te Atatu on that journey. From today, we draw a line in the sand on the past and focus on what needs to be done in the future for the ordinary hard working Kiwi men and women and their families in Te Atatu” Mr Twyford said.

Phil Twyford has been a Labour list MP since 2008 and led Labour’s campaign in the Super City as Spokesperson on Auckland issues.
