Yes, it was New Zealand Masters

We got it wrong.

In our report titled, Veterans write history in Soccer published in our February 1, 2010 issue, we had mistakenly said that ‘Lautoka Masters’ walked away from a match, instead of ‘New Zealand Masters.’

Since then, we have received a host of phone calls and emails stating that we should issue the necessary correction.

We did so in our Web Edition instantly, stating that the tournament was flawless, “but for an incident in which the New Zealand team, ‘New Zealand Masters’ walked away from a match during a penalty shoot out.”

As reported in our last issue, the Tournament, 11th in an annual series, organised by the New Zealand Veterans Soccer Association with the support of teams on either side of the Tasman, witnessed glorious soccer under a bright and sunny day, albeit with a threat of rain.

The Memorial Cup matches, held for Over 35, witnessed a record number of 25 teams in the fray, while the Over 40 matches, held to decide the winner of the Billy Singh Memorial Trophy (named after the son of Mahendra Singh), accounted for eight teams.

‘Melbourne Combined’ walked away with the Sashi Mahendra Singh Memorial Cup, defeating ‘Sydney Nadi’ with one goal to nil.

The Over 40s final was played between ‘Hamilton Nadroga’ and ‘Sydney Ba.’

‘Hamilton Nadroga’ came out victors in the end.
