Self-confidence holds the key to progress

Teenagers are often accused of being frivolous, unmindful of the social and economic challenges and most important of all, oblivious to the concerns of elders.

But there are many who are caring, aware of their responsibilities and again, most important of all, focused on doing well in their life and career.

Our Model of the Fortnight Sonia Nath belongs to the latter category.

This 19-year-old Mental Health Science student (at Unitec) is growing up as a conscientious citizen of this country.

“I hope to develop my career in Social Services, in preparation for which, I am learning about the human mind and how it works. I am also keen on becoming a Children’s Counsellor,” she said.

Sonia obviously believes in self-dependence and economic freedom, for she is already a full-time employee at a commercial firm in Manukau, working five days a week, using the after-hours for her scholastic and social pursuits.

Looking after children in their formative years and nursing them to grow is among her passions in life.

“Children are our future and how they shape their personality and develop their skills will reflect on the future of our community, society and the country. It is therefore important to spend time on their development,” she said.

Born and raised in a Hindu family of Fiji Indians who migrated to New Zealand more than 20 years ago, Sonia has taken her mother to be her best friend, while her father dotes over their only child.

Reading non-fiction is a part of her hobby, although modelling and appearing in fashion shows are her passion.

“Facing people and the camera gives me self-confidence. I would like to use these opportunities to promote our colourful Indian culture,” she said.
