Talent of the Fortnight

A singing star in the making

In a few years now, she could be a qualified electrical and electronics engineer pursuing a successful career in computer sciences. In pursuing that dream, she would not forfeit her interest in Carnatic Music, for more than proficiency and passion, it is her art of living.

While a few are endowed with innate talent, fewer have the good fortune of having their mother and celebrities as their pedagogues.

Vishnu Priya, our Talent of the Fortnight, is one of a kind.

Two years ago, she became the youngest musician (at 15 years of age) to obtain double graduation in Carnatic Music from the University of Madras and the New Zealand Carnatic Music Society.

The Seventh Form Mt Roskill Grammar School student perhaps sang even before she talked. As well as her mother, Padma Govardhan (Principal, Sangeetha Bharathi Music School), many other stalwarts (exponent Dr Balamurali Krishna and Delhi University Music Department Head Professor Radha Venkatachalam) have been her teachers and mentors.

In August 2008, about 800 people were guests at her music Arangetram, the first of its type in New Zealand; she ended the concerted after four hours, only because it was time to vacate the auditorium.

Be it an audience of 30 or 3000, Vishnu Priya’s repertoire has reverberated the corridors of music academies appeasing music lovers and critics in New Zealand and India. With more than 250 public concerts to her credit, she is fast becoming a favoured artiste at special concerts organised in several parts of India.

Vishnu Priya is also training under Bhavani Suresh to be an able Veena artiste and may soon add another distinction of being the first teenager to present concerts as a vocalist and instrumentalist.
