Appeal for Fiji flood relief
Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) First Vice-President Javed Khan has appealed to New Zealand to consider the plight of the victims of Cyclone Tomas that ravaged several parts of Fiji last fortnight.
The Category Four Storm packed winds of up to 170 kms an hour, forcing suspension of public services and international flights.
A Fiji Meteorological Service report said gusts had caused havoc across the north of the country, interrupting power supply.
Mr Khan said the Macuata Muslim League had appealed for immediate help.
“We have placed a 20-foot container at the Al Farooq Mosque located at 34 Portage Road in Otahuhu. Anyone keen on helping the poor victims in Fiji may drop relief supplies, especially rice, flour, noodles, biscuits, usable clothes and such other useful items as soon as possible,” he said.
Welfare Coordinator Faiyaz Khan said while the response thus far has been heart-warming, there was need for more.
“Donors can pay for food packets at any Moshims Discount House. Delivery of these will be automatically arranged,” he said.
Further information can be obtained from Faiyaz Khan on 021-2609104.
