Model of the Fortnight
Optimism spurs hope in life
“It is better to light a candle than to curse darkness,” runs a Chinese proverb, personifying which are people who succeed in life and career, with hard work and a positive mental attitude.
Screaming to prove this dictum is our Model of the Fortnight, Nina Stairmand.
The 20-year-old youngster is every inch a Kiwi – in upbringing, education, willingness to do any job that accrues an honest dollar and most important of all, a friendly approach to people.
Born and raised in Northland to well-meaning parents (her mother is a lawyer and her father has just taken up nursing, having sold his farm), Nina spent her formative years in Tokoroa (Waikato) doing a host of jobs. Her move to Auckland brought her to the modelling industry, which she says was fun and money.
“I have met some awesome people; one of my favourite shoots was in a rundown skate park with tagging everywhere; I was some sort of a bad girl dressed up in hoods, chains and chucks,” she said.
Nina is a no non-sense girl, with a firm focus on making it in life. The fact that she takes any job seriously was proved two years ago, when she sold a house, while employed at a real estate company- she must have been the first teenager to achieve such a feat. Several other jobs later (including advertising space for newspapers and magazines), she is now employed at a Central Auckland bar.
Nina says destiny remains in one’s own hand and not steered by any other.
“You can achieve everything you want, if you set your mind to it and work hard,” she said.
Among her short-term objectives are to appear at the annual Air New Zealand fashion show, travel around the world (starting with South East Asia) and starting her own business over the next five years.
For such determined youngsters, even sky is not the limit.
