Fiji-Indians living in the Wellington region will observe the 131st anniversary of the Girmit on May 16 with solemnity and seriousness.

Fiji Indian Association is organising the four-hour programme, beginning at 2 pm at the Indian Cultural Hall, located at Petone.

As well as speeches and cultural programme, the organisers have arranged to offer spot prizes to those considered in the ‘Best Grimitya Dress.’

Fiji Indians remember every year the agony and torture that their ancestors endured during the Girmitya period (1879 to 1919) during which the British recruited more than 60,000 Indians to work in Fiji under the indenture system (Girmit).

The first ship carrying the first ‘consignment’ of Grimityas arrived in Fiji on May 14, 1879.
