Talent of the Fortnight
Saturation leads to new pastures
Clinton Cardozo is one of those who constantly look for challenges in life, with a spirit of adventure.
It was therefore no surprise that creative artist of Goan origin got bored with psychology after four years of study and decided to pursue design and animation at St Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
“It is customary for parents to push their children into Arts, Commerce and Science but I decided to break out of this system,” he said.
The design course gave him more confidence, placing him as a graphic designer and photographer with a commercial firm in the Arab Gulf State of Qatar.
Saturation hit him again a few years later, and he decided to move to New Zealand to study Visual Arts.
Part-time employment at a contemporary arts magazine not only gave him job satisfaction but also earned the ‘Best Original Photography’ and ‘Best Cover Picture’ awards in a competition held last year.
Accolades and achievements do not affect him.
“These do not mean much as they are only topics of conversation. It boosts unnecessary ego; I believe that a photographer is as good as his or her last project,” he said.
Clinton has continuously proved to be an artist with a difference.
He is passionate about photography but at the fundamental level which is its mimetic relationship with reality.
He has captured fashion and glamour, which has appealed to almost every beholder, but he was still bored.
“Such photography makes one a producer of art but not an artist. The camera captures reality but that is not beautiful all the time,” he said.
Clinton has launched a project, which incorporates a series of family portraits of the First Generation migrants.
He said the project would be a good platform to introduce different cultures to all New Zealanders and is keen to involve families.
“I hope to publish a book in due course incorporating these cultures and people, which would be useful for the future generations to track down photographically their origin and ancestors,” he said.
