Variety entertainment marks Hamilton Diwali
Punctuality was one of the most impressive aspects of Diwali 2009 held at the Founders Theatre on October 25, says Roy Vellara, Secretary of the Indian Cultural Society Waikato Inc.
He said the event afforded a unique opportunity for people from various parts of the country to experience quality entertainment and food.
“It was also a great opportunity to explore and celebrate India’s diverse culture and traditions, including regional food, art and entertainment,” he said.
Mr Vellara said a documentary with English commentary enabled people from other ethnic groups to understand and appreciate the significance of Diwali.
Tribute to Bollywood was the title of the item presented by the Auckland based V4U Entertainments Group, while Welcome to New Zealand, performed by the Monisha Dance Group extolled the rich heritage of India.
An Indian-Maori fusion dance, held at the outset was yet another highlight of the programme, Mr Vellara said.
“Energy levels were high as the Bhangra and Giddha dances were performed, stunning many in the audience. A few classical dance items based on Kathak Rap, Bengali Folk, Kuchipudi and Tamil Folk were also impressive.
“The Govan Dance by Tatiana and Bollywood dance by Generation Y- Priya & Group were also well received,” he said.
More than 1200 people reportedly attended the programme, prompting Association President to announce that Diwali 2010, marking the 20th anniversary of Indian Cultural Society Waikato, will be “a better and bigger event.”
